One of the most negative reality TV shows that I can think of is Honey Boo Boo. Honey Boo Boo is a popular show that showcases the life of an overweight child beauty pageant contestant, Alana Thompson aka Honey Boo Boo from rural Georgia. The show also features Alana’s mother, her mother’s live in boyfriend, and Alana’s three sisters. The women in the show are all morbidly obese at best and appear to have little to no concern for their general cleanliness. Often times on the show, Alana’s mother, June Shannon, will openly discuss her dirty skin folds and will often pass gas on national TV and thinks that it is hilarious. These women are the picture of redneck trailer trash. What is this woman teaching her young, impressionable children? Teenagers will say, and do almost anything for recognition, either from their peers, or from their family members.  I personally have talked to quite a few teenagers who feel like they don't fit in just because they don't have a smart phone, or the newest clothes, accessories. In conclusion, I would have to say that, all in all, reality TV presents more of a problem for our society than it does any sort of benefit. It can be fun to watch, sometimes, but when fun to watch becomes “I should try that sometime”, or “I'm gonna buy one of those”/”I'm gonna get my parents to buy me that”, etc. Then it becomes a problem, and I'm sure those three sentences have been spoken, though not necessarily out loud, much more than once. If we could somehow get people, of all ages, but especially teenagers, to realize, that what they see on TV is not how they should try to live their lives, then I feel reality TV could be more of a benefit. Or instead, if we could get people to view reality shows as a guidelines of how not to live their own lives, then it would definitely be a benefit, though as it stands, it's making impressions, whether people realize it or not, that are negatively affecting many people, and their families.

People seem to have no attachment in their life with the world around them, so in a sense, they seem to want to cling to what is popular.  Regardless of how completely silly they look wearing the latest fashion, or how ridiculous they sound trying out the new slang, they feel comfortable being like everyone else.  They take pride in the fact that the price tag on the jeans they just bought is just a little higher than yours.  Everything seems to be a competition within the human race to be the best of the best.  If we stopped trying to beat everyone, we could enjoy life.  We could even make new friends all over the world. 

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to fit in.  I realized I don’t have the money for the luxurious life that most kids live.  People are so focused on the price tag of life that they are not taking time to notice our world crumbling around them.  If that is not the case, then they know what is going on in life and are watching other forms of drama to try to block out the harshness of reality.  Life is not that difficult really.

Not all reality shows would require audiences to vote, such shows are “The Bachelor;” and other reality shows that are documentary in style. However, in my opinion, their purpose is not about mere marketing and advertising.  Reality shows are literary pieces before they came out of media.  There is an underlying inspiration and substance behind these successful reality shows that are not after for promoting stars. These reality television shows could be satiric exhibitions that deem entertains the audience. In my opinion, the impact of these reality shows is awareness and information.  Perhaps, our attention is easier to sustain in front of the television than in front of a book.  We got more understanding how life is difficult, how love is compromise, how careers are challenging, based on the reality shows that do not fake the scripts of events.


Not all impacts are worth, though. Did we learn something from the hurtful truths that we see on reality television? For instance, did we save marriages or created successful relationships after watching dating shows? Did we learn to control our diet after watching self esteem shows?  Did we save money after watching reality shows about makeover experiences? For me the idea behind showing the sad truths of reality television is for us to learn.  We may be aware and informed about the happenings that the reality shows are trying to express over the media.  However, there are instance where we just tend to copy the sad truths imposed to us. From these, I feel that reality shows has impacted the viewing public by being submissive and passive to negative outcomes because we tend to perceive them as usual occurrences.  We feel that broken relationships are just normal, and so there would be instances were saving relationships is does not hold a strong threshold between partners.  Consumerism and other irrelevant spending could be relevant because that’s how the reality television shows portrays their importance.
